SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The City of Huntsville is seeking community input for its University-Medical Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Planning Study, aiming to transform University Drive into a more accessible, transit-friendly corridor.
A public kickoff event was scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, at 5:30 p.m. at the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Charger Union Theater, located at 4705 Holmes Avenue. Following the presentation, attendees are invited to a casual gathering at The Camp in the MidCity District at 5909 University Drive.
The TOD study focuses on integrating public transportation with development along University Drive, emphasizing three key areas: Northwoods, UAH, and MidCity. These clusters are identified as prime locations for transit-support–ive residential growth, including housing options for essential workers, students, and families.
Dennis Madsen, Manager of Urban and Long-Range Planning, highlighted the importance of public participation: “We’re excited to hear ideas and suggestions from the public as the TOD study continues to evolve into a firm strategy for this critical corridor. Public comment is vital in providing a unique perspective in unlocking or further expanding ideas.”
The study, funded by an $850,000 grant from the Federal Transit Authority, will also explore affordable housing policies and conceptual designs for station areas and first/last mile connections. The goal is to visualize how TOD might appear along the corridor and link to nearby areas, promoting shorter trips, healthier lifestyles, and more efficient use of city resources.
Residents are encouraged to attend the kickoff event to share their perspectives and contribute to shaping the future of University Drive.
