SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter says a circulating remark from a private caucus meeting was taken out of context, as lawmakers condemn the secret recording and leak.

A secretly recorded 57-second clip from an hour-long House Republican Caucus meeting has sparked controversy inside the Alabama Statehouse and intensified tensions within House leadership.

Lawmakers present at the closed-door meeting, speaking anonymously due to caucus confidentiality rules, say the excerpt was selectively released to damage Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter and distort the broader leadership debate.

The meeting initially focused on legislation proposing to shift the Alabama Public Service Commission from an elected to an appointed body. Members say that the discussion lasted roughly 30 minutes before turning to House leadership — specifically, whether Rep. Scott Stadthagen, R-Hartselle, should remain as the majority leader while running for chairman of the Alabama Republican Party.

During that exchange, Ledbetter made the remark now circulating publicly: “I could give a shit about the Republican Party.”

In a statement, Ledbetter said his comments were made in the context of prioritizing House Republicans’ reelection efforts and maintaining the GOP supermajority.

“When you’re speaker, House Republican elections come first,” Ledbetter said, adding that he fully supports the Republican Party.

Lawmakers who attended the meeting argue the line was stripped of context.

“The focus was on protecting House members,” one member said. “It wasn’t an attack on the party.”

Several members described the leak as a violation of caucus confidentiality and said the recording has caused frustration and distrust.

“This isn’t a revolt against the speaker,” one lawmaker said. “It’s a leadership debate — and someone tried to weaponize it.”
