A Jefferson County jury on Monday sentenced Antonio Shaw, 32, to life without the possibility of parole for a deadly shooting that killed two men, injured a third, and narrowly missed a 1-year-old boy at a Birmingham gas station.
Shaw was convicted of two counts of capital murder, two counts of attempted murder, and discharging a firearm into a vehicle in the June 5, 2021 shootings that claimed the lives of Rikki D’Unri Christopher Bynum, 27, and Joseph Demetrice Robinson, 25. The longtime friends were gunned down in front of Robinson’s toddler son outside the Circle K near Roebuck Plaza.
Following the jury’s recommendation, Jefferson County Circuit Judge Michael Streety imposed life without parole on the capital murder convictions, along with life sentences for attempted murder and a 10-year sentence for discharging a weapon — the maximum allowed by law.
Deadly Shooting Near East Precinct
Gunfire erupted around 9 p.m. that Saturday night, just two blocks from Birmingham’s East Precinct. Officers on patrol heard multiple shots and rushed to the parking lot, finding three men wounded.
Corey Lamont Glover Jr. survived, while Robinson’s 1-year-old son, Joseph Jr., miraculously escaped injury. A store clerk carried the child to safety.
Police quickly captured Shaw a short distance away in the 9100 block of Parkway East after witnesses gave a description of the suspect. A weapon was recovered. Authorities said the violence stemmed from an ongoing dispute and was caught on surveillance video.
Families and Prosecutors React
Deputy District Attorneys Neal Zarzour, Blake Owens, and Isabella Colombo praised the jury’s decision, saying it ensures Shaw “will never be able to hurt anyone else in the free world again.”
At the time of the murders, Shaw was already out on bond for a 2018 shooting that wounded two people.
Bynum was the father of 12 children and known for his generous heart. Robinson, a father of two, ran his own hauling and towing business and worked to provide a better life for his family.
