The University of Alabama in Huntsville is honoring one of the most influential figures in its athletic history by naming the UAH softball field for longtime head coach Les Stuedeman, recognizing her decades-long impact on the Charger softball program.

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved the resolution to name Les Stuedeman Field during its Feb. 6 meeting at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Stuedeman founded the UAH softball program in 1996 and led it for nearly 30 years, retiring in 2025 after building the Chargers into a national contender.

“What an honor and privilege it is for us to name the field after Les,” said UAH Director of Athletics Dr. Cade Smith. “She poured her heart and soul into building this program and facility from the ground up.”

Stuedeman said the recognition reflects her deep love for the university and its community. “I loved every second of being a Charger,” she said. “To have my name become part of this campus is more than I ever imagined.”

During her tenure, Stuedeman led UAH to 13 Gulf South Conference championships and 26 NCAA tournament appearances, coaching 34 All-Americans. She was named GSC Coach of the Year 10 times and earned Coach of the Decade honors in both 2010 and 2020.

UAH Athletics plans to celebrate the field naming later this semester. Officials say the honor ensures Stuedeman’s legacy will inspire future generations of Charger softball players.
