Alabama Congresswoman Fights for Federal Workers as IRS and Social Security Layoffs Mount
SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS
Birmingham, AL – U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) is taking a stand against sweeping federal layoffs that she says are unjustly targeting hardworking government employees in Alabama and beyond. The congresswoman is calling out billionaire Elon Musk and the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency for what she describes as a reckless gutting of essential agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Sewell sounded the alarm Tuesday after receiving reports that over 100 of her constituents employed at Birmingham’s Social Security Administration office had been abruptly terminated. She later clarified that the cuts extend beyond Alabama, affecting SSA’s entire Region 4, which includes multiple states.
“We are working to determine exactly how many employees in Alabama’s 7th Congressional District have been impacted, but our office has heard from constituents today who lost their jobs,” Sewell stated.
The congresswoman didn’t hold back in condemning Musk’s role in the sweeping government downsizing.
“Elon Musk’s reckless power trip is directly threatening the livelihoods of my constituents,” she tweeted. “This madness must stop!”
Sewell’s outrage extends beyond the SSA layoffs. She joined fellow House Democrats in condemning the reported closure of more than 100 IRS taxpayer assistance offices, a move that could leave countless Americans struggling to file their taxes.
“The President and Musk have been creating chaos since the moment they took power,” Sewell and other top Democratic lawmakers stated in a joint release. “Mass layoffs and federal program and funding freezes have hurt Americans in every corner of the country, and they’ve set their sights on the filing season next.”
The administration has already eliminated nearly 7,000 IRS jobs, and now, offices providing taxpayer assistance are reportedly shutting down without the legally required 90-day public notice. Sewell and her colleagues are demanding immediate transparency.
“We need answers now,” she said. “People deserve to know if their local assistance centers are being shut down.” Sewell has long championed working families and government employees, making these cuts a direct attack on the communities she represents. As the situation unfolds, she vows to keep fighting for answers and for the workers who suddenly find themselves without a paycheck
