Changes are coming to one of Redstone Arsenal’s busiest access points.

Starting Sept. 2Gate 3 on Redstone Road will close at 1 p.m. each day, a move officials say is necessary because of federal workforce cuts. Morning rush-hour traffic — from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. — will not be affected.

Col. Erin Eike, garrison commander, said the post’s Security Guard Force has been reduced by 17%. With fewer guards and a federal hiring freeze, the Arsenal can no longer keep the gate fully staffed. “We are adjusting to the new reality,” Eike said, adding that overtime pay is no longer allowed.

The Arsenal had been relying on extra shifts to keep gates open, but those funds have been cut. Temporary help from active-duty troops has eased the strain, though officials admit it’s not enough to maintain the same level of service.

Eike said the post remains committed to keeping access safe and secure despite the challenges.

Residents and workers are encouraged to check official Redstone Arsenal social media and the My Army Post App for the latest updates on gate hours and traffic changes.
