A shooting at a funeral home April 11 left one man dead and three injured as they left the memorial service for a man who was shot and killed last month, police said.

People were milling outside  Stewart Funeral Home on Benning Road, NE shortly after noon when gunshots erupted that police said appeared directed at several  people outside the funeral home, police said.

Uniformed officers were nearby at the time.

The family of the man who was being memorialized had requested police presence. The event was to mourn the death of Stephon Carroll, 24, who was shot and killed March 24. No arrests have been made in that case, police said.

In the past, police monitored funerals connected to street crime for both surveillance of those associated with the deceased and deterrence against retaliatory violence.

Police have not yet identified the man who was shot and killed or identified the man and two women who were wounded. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The wounded were admitted to a local hospital, according to a D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman.

Representatives of the funeral home, one of the oldest in the city, issued a statement shortly after the incident labeling gun violence a “national crisis” and calling the shooting “an unimaginable tragedy following a sacred ritual.”
