Arely Guzman, 28, of Albertville, faces a federal charge of conspiracy to transport undocumented immigrants following an investigation that began with a separate doxing allegation, according to court records.

A North Alabama woman is facing federal charges after authorities allege she was involved in a conspiracy to transport undocumented immigrants, according to court records.

Arely Guzman, 28, of Albertville, has been charged with conspiracy to transport undocumented immigrants, a federal offense that emerged during an investigation that initially focused on a separate state charge.

Guzman was arrested on Dec. 19 in DeKalb County on a charge of doxing, according to jail records, and was released on a $500 bond on Dec. 23. Court documents state that the doxing charge stemmed from allegations that Guzman publicly identified an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) employee working in the Kilpatrick and Albertville area. Investigators allege Guzman posted the employee’s name on Facebook and encouraged others to target the individual online.

During the investigation into the doxing allegation, authorities examined Guzman’s phone. According to federal court filings, that examination led investigators to evidence suggesting Guzman’s involvement in human smuggling activities.

The federal complaint alleges Guzman participated in “facilitating human smuggling ventures and moving monetary instruments,” which formed the basis for the conspiracy charge. Court records further state that the alleged activity included transporting individuals described by authorities as “special interest migrants,” including Chinese nationals.

Federal officials have not released additional details regarding the scope of the alleged operation or whether other individuals may face charges related to the investigation.

The federal charge is being handled in U.S. District Court. Guzman is scheduled to appear for a hearing on Dec. 31, when the court is expected to address the charge and outline next steps in the case.

As with all criminal cases, the allegations outlined in court documents are accusations only. Guzman is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The case remains under review as it proceeds through the federal court system.
