HUNTSVILLE, AL — The Madison County Democratic Party is calling on Alabama’s Congressional Delegation to reject the Trump/GOP-backed budget proposal that would deliver massive tax breaks to the wealthy while slashing life-saving programs like Medicaid and SNAP.

The U.S. House of Representatives is preparing to vote on the legislation ahead of the May 22 deadline. The proposed package would impose severe restrictions on Medicaid and food assistance programs, threatening health care coverage for more than 7 million Americans and placing additional strain on low-income families across the country.

“This budget is nothing less than Robin Hood in reverse,” said Chairwoman Sheila McNeil. “It takes from the poor to give to the rich. Cutting food and health support while rewarding billionaires and profitable corporations is a moral failure and a policy disaster.”

The bill reflects a continued push by fiscal conservatives to gut essential services while extending the controversial tax cuts first enacted under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The Madison CountyDemocrats warn that these changes would create new barriers to care, increase hardship in working-class communities, and burden already-struggling state budgets.

“We urge all members of Alabama’s delegation—Republican and Democrat alike—to vote NO on anyproposal that sacrifices the well-being of everyday families for the benefit of the ultra-wealthy,” said McNeil. “Making it harder for people to see a doctor or put food on the table does not build a stronger nation. It deepens inequality and injustice.”

Chairwoman McNeil also called on lawmakers who claim Christian values to reflect on the ethical implications of the bill:

“Many Republicans supporting this legislation say they are Christians. But what does the Bible say about those who make life harder for the poor? Isaiah 10:1-3 warns, ‘Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees…’ and Proverbs 14:31 says, ‘Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker.’ To whom will they listen if they do not heed God’s words?”

The Madison County Democratic Party is asking constituents to contact their representatives and demand that they oppose this unjust budget plan.
