Residents in Madison will soon see a slight increase in their monthly bills as city leaders move to address rising costs tied to bulk trash and yard waste collection.
The Madison City Council unanimously approved the rate increase, which will raise monthly fees to $17.35 for Limestone County residents and $17.08 for Madison County residents. City officials say the adjustment is necessary to offset ongoing financial losses, with the program currently costing the city between $25,000 and $26,000 each month.
The increase—approximately $1.55 per household—is part of a broader effort to make the service financially sustainable rather than operate at a deficit. Another adjustment is already scheduled for September 2027, when rates are expected to rise by an additional 4%.
Bulk trash services include the removal of large household items, such as furniture and appliances, and yard debris, such as tree limbs and brush, which are typically collected curbside through city-contracted services.
City leaders say the change reflects a broader trend across North Alabama, where municipalities are adjusting sanitation rates to keep pace with operational demands and rising service costs. In nearby Huntsville, for example, increases in sanitation rates were approved to help offset expenses associated with serving tens of thousands of households and maintaining collection services.
For Madison residents, the increase may be modest, but it underscores the growing cost of maintaining essential services. Officials say the goal is simple: ensure reliable service today while planning responsibly for the future.
