Lundon Dewayne Harkey, 37, is shown during an arrest that is now under review by Huntsville police.

The Huntsville Police Department has launched an internal review following a use-of-force incident during a late-night arrest, captured on video and circulated on social media.

Police confirmed Friday that the officer involved has been placed on administrative duty while the department conducts a full review of the incident.

According to HPD, the incident occurred on Wednesday around 11:30 p.m. after an officer observed a vehicle failing to stop while leaving a local business on Jordan Lane near Oakwood Avenue. When the officer attempted a traffic stop, the driver — identified as Lundon Dewayne Harkey, 37, of Huntsville — allegedly attempted to flee.

Police said a brief vehicle pursuit followed, ending when Harkey lost control and crashed. After the crash, Harkey reportedly attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by the officer. During the arrest, HPD said force was used as the officer worked to take Harkey into custody.

A video posted to social media under the title “Justice for Lundon Harkey” shows an officer sitting on the suspect’s back and appearing to strike him multiple times as additional officers arrived on scene.

“The Huntsville Police Department is aware of a video circulating on social media involving a use-of-force incident with one of our officers,” the department said in a statement.

Police also reported that during the arrest, Harkey attempted to destroy what appeared to be illegal narcotics by swallowing the substance. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Madison County Jail.

Harkey faces charges including felony attempting to elude a police officer, resisting arrest, and tampering with physical evidence.

HPD said it is reviewing all available evidence, including body-worn camera footage and investigative materials, to determine whether departmental policies were followed.

The department said it will release additional information once the review is complete.
