Huntsville International Airport saw record-breaking passenger traffic in February, continuing a steady growth trend in North Alabama.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville International Airport is continuing its steady climb, setting a record for February as passenger traffic and cargo activity grow alongside North Alabama’s booming population.

Airport officials report 122,433 passengers traveled through Huntsville in February, marking a 4.4% increase over the same month last year. So far in 2026, traffic has reached 237,973 passengers, putting the airport ahead of last year’s pace.

The numbers reflect more than just travel trends — they signal Huntsville’s continued economic and population growth. Passenger totals have topped prior-year numbers in 11 of the past 14 months, showing consistent demand.

While American Airlines saw a slight dip, it remains the airport’s largest carrier. Delta and United continue to hold strong positions, while lower-cost options like Breeze Airways and Allegiant Air are gaining traction, offering more affordable travel choices for residents.

Airport leaders say travel habits have shifted since the pandemic. Where business trips once dominated, leisure travel now makes up about half of all passengers — a change that reflects how people are choosing to move and spend.

Cargo growth is also fueling momentum. Air freight reached nearly 7 million pounds in February, a 43% jump from last year, reinforcing Huntsville’s role as a key logistics hub.

Rail cargo declined, however, a trend that officials have previously tied to tariff impacts.

With spring break travel underway, officials expect the upward trend to continue, encouraging travelers to arrive early as passenger volume rises.
