Huntsville Named Permanent Home of U.S. Space Command
SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – – Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville has officially been selected as the permanent headquarters for U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM), a milestone decision that strengthens America’s national defense and cements North Alabama’s place at the forefront of space leadership.
President Donald Trump announced the decision following a rigorous, twice-reviewed site selection process that confirmed Huntsville’s unmatched ability to support the mission’s long-term objectives. Over the next five years, about 1,400 Space Command jobs will transition to Redstone Arsenal, bringing new growth and opportunity to the region.
“This decision is not about what’s best for Huntsville – it’s about being mission-focused,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “By locating Space Command at Redstone, our nation is prepared to meet growing challenges in space. Huntsville is ready with an experienced workforce, resilient infrastructure, and deep commitment to national defense.”
Battle expanded on the broader meaning of the announcement:
“This decision isn’t just about Huntsville—it’s about readiness for the warfighter. We stand ready to support Space Command from day one, with the infrastructure, the people, and the resources that ensure success.”
Madison County Commission Chairman Mac McCutcheon called the decision “a win for our region and our country,” adding that city, county, state, and federal partners “worked side by side to prepare for this opportunity.”
Redstone Arsenal: A Federal Powerhouse
Home to more than 65 federal agencies, Redstone Arsenal is already a cornerstone of U.S. security and innovation. It houses the Army Materiel Command, the Missile Defense Agency, and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, creating a hub of expertise that will now expand to include U.S. Space Command. Approximately 60 acres at the center of the Arsenal have been designated for the new headquarters.
Chip Cherry, CEO of the Huntsville Madison County Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the community’s readiness:
“Our proven track record supporting the Department of Defense speaks for itself. We will welcome Space Command families with open arms and ensure a seamless transition.”
Building for the Future
Huntsville’s forward-thinking investments have prepared the city for this moment. In recent years, the community has completed:
• $400M+ in transportation improvements with $250M more under construction
• $600M in K–12 school upgrades to support military families
• $200M in healthcare expansions, including Huntsville Hospital upgrades
• $150M+ in quality-of-life projects, from parks to community centers
“These investments reflect years of planning to ensure we were ready for this opportunity,” said Mayor Battle. “From day one, Huntsville is mission-ready.”

Alabama always stands ready to support the defense of our great nation.”
• Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL): “Locating the permanent Space Command headquarters at Redstone Arsenal is in the best national security interest of the United States. I’m deeply grateful to President Trump and Secretary Hegseth for restoring merit and integrity to the process. Alabama’s world-class aerospace and defense workforce stands ready to strengthen our national security long into the future.”
• Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL): “This was never supposed to be about politics. After a thorough selection process involving 66 possible locations, Huntsville was chosen fair and square. • Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL-07): “Huntsville, Alabama is unequivocally the best place for Space Command. The Rocket City and the entire State of Alabama are thrilled to continue playing a central role in advancing the United States’ dominance in the frontier of space. I have long championed this effort, and today is a monumental victory for our state and our nation.”
• Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile): “Two separate studies by the Department of Defense determined that the best location for the Space Command is in Alabama. I’m a firm believer that our state has shown the capacity to handle our nation’s space defense. It’s time to get this behind us, get some shovels in the ground, get some workers here, and get going in defending the country.”
