Gulf Shores police arrested 42 more people during the fourth week of spring break, bringing the total of spring break-related arrests to 232 — more than half of those for underage possession of alcohol.

During the fourth week of the spring break period, which began March 1 and includes a ban on alcohol on all public beaches, there were 19 more arrests for underage drinking, three for public intoxication, 14 for various drug charges, two DUIs, three obstruction of justice and one assault.

The assault charge stemmed from a shooting on March 27 on Gulf Shores Parkway which sent a juvenile to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. Gregory D. Tate III of Bay Minette was arrested on assault charges after attempting to flee the scene by breaking into cars.

The most recent arrests bring the totals to:

  • Underage possession of alcohol: 126
  • Public intoxication: 13
  • Obstruction of justice: 7
  • Resisting arrest: 2
  • Drug charges: 60
  • DUI: 16
  • Theft/shoplifting: 7
  • Assault: 1

“We will continue to focus additional resources at the beachfront and to take pro-active measures to emphasize safety for our residents and visitors,” police said in a statement after the shooting, which occurred exactly a year after a similar incident during spring break 2023 in Gulf Shores that also injured a juvenile.
