Speaking to a full house in Huntsville on Friday, U.S. Sen. Katie Britt delivered a pointed critique of Senate Democrats over stalled Homeland Security funding, while highlighting federal investments and defense wins for North Alabama.

Addressing attendees at a Washington Update hosted by the Huntsville Madison County Chamber at the Von Braun Center, Britt defended the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations bill and accused Democrats of walking away from negotiations, risking a partial government shutdown.

“Unfortunately, this is yet another example of Democrats walking away from the table and politics being in play,” she said, warning that TSA officers, Coast Guard personnel, Secret Service agents, ICE officers, and other frontline workers could miss paychecks if funding is not approved.

Britt, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, said Republicans agreed to a two-week continuing resolution to continue negotiations. She emphasized a commitment to finding a bipartisan solution but stressed that politics should not jeopardize essential federal operations.

The senator also addressed local law enforcement cooperation, saying Huntsville officials must work with federal authorities to remove individuals with final orders of removal.

Turning to defense priorities, Britt highlighted the relocation of U.S. Space Command to Huntsville, promising 50% of personnel will move to Alabama by the end of 2028. She also cited continued funding commitments for the Marshall Space Flight Center, artificial intelligence research at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, and Redstone Arsenal infrastructure.

Britt closed with concerns about social media’s impact on children and teens, warning of rising rates of depression, online dangers, and fentanyl-laced content. She noted bipartisan legislation she is pursuing to create safeguards for minors.

“It’s an honor of a lifetime,” Britt said of representing Alabama, pledging to continue partnering with local leaders to advance economic, defense, and national security priorities in the region.
