Oakwood University Church (OUC) hosted its third annual Black Authors & Art Festival, celebrating black creativity and storytelling. This event provided a space for black artists, writers, and business owners to showcase their work, connect with the community, and inspire other aspiring creatives.
The festival offered a diverse lineup of exhibits showcasing paintings, hand-carved figurines, handcrafted jewelry, candles, and published books. Each exhibit offered attendees a glimpse into the creative process and the talents of different artists.
A highlight of the event was a discussion between guest author Sharona Henderson and Pastor Kimberly Mann, OUC youth pastor and the event coordinator. Henderson, who wrote “After They Touched Me,” a book about surviving sexual abuse, focused her conversation with Pastor Mann on the journey of becoming a writer and how to cultivate a creative mindset.
Mann also shared words of wisdom, recalling advice from a former teacher who said, “Write with your heart, then edit with your head.” She encouraged young artists and writers to fully embrace their passions and trust that the details will fall into place as they begin to develop their craft.
Sandra Lester, one of the featured artists, emphasized the need to cultivate a stable profession while developing one’s artistic skill. A retired art teacher, going into education ensured financial stability while giving her space to express her personal creativity on the side through her paintings.
Children who attended had their own interactive space. A storytelling area allowed them to engage in captivating stories and create their own booklets. And a freestyle painting station gave them the opportunity to express their creativity through art.
The Black Authors and Art Festival emphasized the importance of fostering a community that uplifts and empowers black creatives in their artistic journey and reminds people to continue the legacy of black excellence.
