HUNTSVILLE, AL — July is Parks and Recreation Month, and the City of Huntsville is pulling out all the stops with the theme “Build Together, Play Together,” spotlighting its expanding recreational infrastructure and inviting residents to enjoy a vibrant lineup of free, family-friendly events.

Mayor Tommy Battle, District 1 Council Member Michelle Watkins, and Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett officially kicked off the celebration, emphasizing the department’s commitment to building inclusive spaces that promote health, wellness, and connection across neighborhoods.

“Building recreational areas and opportunities for play demonstrates our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our residents,” said Mayor Battle. “We’re creating spaces where people of all ages can connect and thrive.”

Investing in Community Spaces

Over the past decade, Huntsville has made substantial investments in parks and recreational projects, including:

  • Apollo Park at MidCity
  • Renovations at Brahan Spring Park and Huntsville Aquatics Center
  • New facilities at John Hunt Park including a recreation center and pickleball courts
  • A skating rink at Stoner Park
  • Enhancements to Goldsmith-Schiffman Field and Big Spring East (in planning)

Director James Gossett added, “It’s the events, programs and daily interactions that give our parks life. From splash pads to storytelling, our spaces are built to serve the soul of the community.”
