Members of the Beta Epsilon Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. bring holiday joy to James I. Dawson Elementary School during the annual BLU Santa celebration, supporting classroom parties for nearly 400 students.
The Beta Epsilon Sigma (BES) Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. continued its tradition of service and holiday giving on Thursday, Dec. 18, through its annual BLU Santa initiative at James I. Dawson Elementary School in Huntsville.
Held during school hours, the school-wide Christmas celebration reached approximately 400 students, transforming classrooms into festive spaces filled with joy, encouragement, and community pride. The event marked a shift from previous years, when BES hosted celebrations at community centers or selected individual families to support. This year, the fraternity expanded its impact by supporting an entire school.
School leaders invited BES to serve as a major sponsor for multiple classroom Christmas parties and to volunteer in facilitating the celebrations. The timing was especially meaningful, as Dawson Elementary recently achieved significant academic progress, improving its State Report Card score from an “F” in 2023, to a “D” in 2024, and reaching a “C” in 2025—a milestone educators wanted to celebrate with students.
Teachers typically receive state allocation funds for classroom supplies such as paper, glue, and crayons, but those funds cannot be used for food, toys, or party materials. To ensure every classroom could celebrate without teachers spending their own money, BES provided $700 in Walmart gift cards to school leaders. The contribution allowed the purchase of food, decorations, and party essentials for simultaneous celebrations across the campus, while preserving academic funds for instructional needs.
As a community service–based organization, Phi Beta Sigma’s BES Chapter views BLU Santa as one of many initiatives aimed at uplifting families, schools, and neighborhoods. Members emphasized that the event was not only about holiday fun, but also about affirming students’ hard work and showing support for educators.
By combining generosity with purpose, BLU Santa at Dawson Elementary highlighted the power of community partnerships in celebrating both seasonal joy and academic success.
