Despite the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic preventing an in-person gathering, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) is in the middle of its 106th annual meeting, under the 2021 theme: “The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity.”

“In these extraordinary times, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History recognizes that we need each other now more than ever. With the limitations of the world-wide pandemic in mind we have decided to move our 106th Conference to a virtual platform. In order to maintain the spirit of community that we each enjoy during the physical conference, we have decided to modify our format to best suit our needs,” ASALH wrote in a statement on their website.

Having begun on Sept. 14 through Sept. 30, each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday ASALH’s annual meeting will convene with interactive events, panels and workshops for registered attendees. Some of the events include the ASALH Film Festival, The Hine/ Horne Inaugural Book Roundtables, plenary sessions, Author’s Book Talk and the ASALH Annual Awards.

On Sept. 21, ASALH hosted an event entitled, “I Fear for My Life: They That Mourn,” which featured a panel of speakers discussing the long, tragic history of African Americans feeling (and being) unprotected in the United States.

Some of the upcoming pieces featured in the ASALH Film Festival include: Invisible History: Middle of Florida’s Hidden Roots (Sept. 23), Racially Charged (Sep. 25) and Geographies of Kinship (Sept. 25).

Also, on Sept. 25, ASALH will showcase the event, “Illuminating the Black Family in History: A Retrospective on Henry Louis Gates Jr.”  Gates, a celebrated Harvard professor, historian and show host, is the recipient of the inaugural ASALH Luminary Award.  Saturday’s event includes celebrity speakers John Legend and S. Epatha Merkerson, and the conversation will be moderated by ASALH President Dr. Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham.
