Anderson Receives $10,000 Sallie Mae TMFC Scholarship

AAMU freshman Ka’Mya Anderson is one of a select group of students nationwide to earn a $10,000 Sallie Mae Fund Bridging the Dream Scholarship. “I was so excited! They notified me in an email, and I called my mom!”

The Sallie Mae Fund partnered with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund in 2021 to establish a scholarship program to level the playing field for students who, without additional support, might miss the opportunity to pursue higher education.

“From a pool of over 1,100 applicants, Ka’Mya stood out as one-of-27 recipients chosen for her exceptional academic performance and commendable moral character,” said Caron Jackson, Manager of Corporate Communications at Sallie Mae. “We’re proud to support what we know will be an exciting journey for her at Alabama A&M University and a bright future ahead.”

Anderson is already on an exciting journey. The clarinet player from Horn Lake, Mississippi, performed with the Marching Maroon and White Band (MMW) at the 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

“We had so much fun, but it was hard work. Our call time was 1 a.m.,” she said. “But you have to do what you have to do when you’re making history! Everyone was calling me saying ‘Ka’Mya, you’re on TV!’”

Anderson thanks her mother for encouraging her to apply for the scholarship during her senior year in high school.

Sallie Mae also offers a resource to search for millions of scholarships called Scholly by Sallie. The user-friendly platform simplifies the scholarship search process. Students can set up profiles and instantly match with scholarships that fit their background and goals.
