Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen has discontinued the Vote For Alabama Mobile app according to his website.

“Please note that the Vote for Alabama Mobile App has been discontinued and is no longer available for use,” a note on the website reads.

The app was created in 2016 under previous Secretary of State John Merill. The app was implemented to help Alabamians register to vote and obtain information about their polling place and the next possible election in the area they live.

“Upon entering office, I looked for ways to make it easier for our citizens to register to vote,” Merill said. “Based on that, I instructed our Information Technology and Elections staff to provide Alabamians an enhanced access to voter registration services at the least cost to the state, while also ensuring that the integrity standards we have are continued and strengthened.”

According to Faith Pierce, a spokeswoman for Allen, she said the decision to discontinue the mobile app was to cut costs.

“To properly maintain the app it was going to cost upward of $12,000 plus an additional annual maintenance fee,” Pierce told a right-wing news outlet.

Allen announced the creation of a new voter roll database to be used in Alabama. In January Allen withdrew Alabama from the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC).
