A historic Birmingham congregation is once again rising—this time with a new home and renewed purpose in the heart of Woodlawn.
First Baptist Church of Woodlawn has begun construction on a new sanctuary at First Avenue North and 53rd Street, marking a major milestone after years of transition and perseverance.
“I don’t think we could have done better,” said Rev. Perry Macon, who has led the church since 2000. “This location puts us right where the community can see us and connect with us.”
Founded in 1931, the church will celebrate 95 years of ministry this May. Leaders hope to move into the new building by the end of 2026.
The congregation’s journey has been marked by both tragedy and resilience. In 1987, its original church building was destroyed by a massive fire. The church later relocated but, in 2019, sold that property, leaving members without a permanent home.
For the past seven years, the congregation has worshipped at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church in Avondale—holding onto faith while planning for the future. Today, weekly attendance remains steady at around 45-55 members.
The new facility will include a 172-seat sanctuary, fellowship hall, kitchen, offices, and parking.
For many, this moment is about more than construction—it’s about legacy. After decades of setbacks, First Baptist Church of Woodlawn is not just rebuilding a structure but reclaiming its place as a pillar in the community.
