Tragedy has struck the city once again.
After responding to a call about a “foul odor” Baltimore police found the decomposing bodies of two children in a unit at Coventry Manor Apartments on Aug. 24.
At approximately 4:37 p.m. that day, Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers were dispatched to the apartment complex in Southwest Baltimore to investigate the reported DOA (dead on arrival), where they later discovered a male and female in a state of decomposition. Visible trauma to the bodies was observed, police said.
The victims have been identified as 6-year-old Da’Neria Thomas and her brother, 8-year-old Davin Thomas.
In a press conference held Aug. 25, Baltimore City Police Commissioner Michael Harrison was joined by Mayor Brandon Scott and Deputy Police Commissioner Sheree Briscoe to provide updates and details on the double homicide investigation.
Homicide investigators have taken over the investigation and are working with the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine an exact cause and time of death, officials said.
While the investigation is still in its early stages, police have confirmed that the children’s mother, 28-year-old Jameria Hall, is the suspect in this case after confessing to murdering the two minors. She is in police custody and BPD detectives will be pursuing criminal charges as they continue gathering evidence that may aid in the investigation.
“My heart goes out to the family members, and on behalf of the Baltimore Police Department we send our condolences and our heartfelt prayers,” Harrison said.
BPD will be looking into Hall’s background and working with Child Protective Services in reference to this case, Harrison added, commending detectives for locating the mother Wednesday morning and bringing her in for questioning where they were able to “extract a confession” from her.
Harrison did not share how and why Hall confessed as the homicide investigation is still underway.
Scott characterized this incident as an “unfathomable, gut-wrenching tragedy” and extended his condolences to the family and loved ones of the victims. The two children would have been going back to school this upcoming Monday, but Scott instead had the misfortune of addressing their untimely death.
“Davin and Da’Neria should be making new friends, they should be showing off their new school shoes, they should really be starting to grow into who they are as a person, inching closer and closer to their full potential,” Scott said.
“And we should be celebrating their promise, but instead we are here today talking about their unfortunate death.”
Scott assured that he and his administration will work to develop the most robust child fatality review process possible.
“We have to and we will close any gaps that enable tragedies like this to occur,” he said.
“Because we know that the ills of our society are tied together, I will continue to push for our young people to get all the support and resources that they deserve, but this cannot go on, and it cannot and will not be our normal.”
Investigators urge anyone with helpful or relevant information to this case to contact BPD detectives at (410) 396-2100.
