Deborah Toney, the embattled warden of Alabama’s largest prison who was placed on administrative leave in March, has retired.
The Alabama Department of Corrections on Friday confirmed Toney’s retirement. She was the warden at Limestone Correctional Facility in Limestone County about 18 miles northwest of downtown Huntsville. Toney’s retirement was effective Aug. 1.
ADOC did not respond to requests on how the issues that surfaced leading to Toney’s administrative leave would be resolved.
The Limestone prison houses more than 2,300 inmates.
A Huntsville television station, WAAY-31, reported in March that Toney is accused of sexual misconduct for conducting pat-down searches on female contract employees coming into the prison. The station also said she is being investigated for failing to protect an inmate who ended up hospitalized in an intensive care unit after an attack inside his cell.
ADOC has not confirmed those reports.
