Alabama A&M University Welcomes First Class of NSF ALSAMP Bridge to Doctorate Program
Alabama A&M University has selected its first class of students in the new National Science Foundation (NSF) Alabama Louis Stokes Alliance for Minorities Participation (ALSAMP) Bridge to Doctorate Program.
Earlier this year, the NSF allocated a significant $1,075,000 grant to Alabama A&M University to launch the transformative two-year Bridge to Doctorate program. The Bridge to Doctorate program provides the necessary academic and research skills that will enable students to earn STEM doctoral degrees and transition into the STEM workforce.

As an initiation to their graduate educational journey on The Hill, faculty recently held an orientation to welcome the 11 Bridge to the Doctorate scholars. Students were assigned faculty mentors in their respective research areas as they pursue their master’s and doctorates in STEM.
Through the program, students receive:
• Stipend Support: $32,000 per year to each of the selected participants, totaling $768,000 over the program’s two-year duration.
• Mentorship: Assigned a mentor in their preferred research field of study.
• Cost of Education Allowance: Financial assistance to alleviate the burden of educational expenses.
• Professional Development: Facilitating travel to professional conferences, mentorship opportunities, and tailored professional development initiatives.
The Principal Investigator of the project is Alabama A&M University President, Dr. Daniel K. Wims, Program Director and Co-PI, Dr. Jeanette Jones, University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences; and other notable Co-PIs in academia: Dr. Martha Verghese, Chair of Food and Animal Sciences; Dr. Padmaja Guggilla, Chair of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, and Dr. Emmett Lodree, Executive Director of Academic Partnerships for the University of Alabama (UA) and Director of UA’s Strategic Graduate Partnerships Initiative (SGPI).
