Approval of engineering design contracts for the $65 million Pinhook Creek project that includes the “Skybridge” pedestrian bridge across Memorial Parkway was not the only action taken by the Huntsville City Council at its meeting on Thursday.

Here are five other actions taken by the council:

MidCity streetscape construction project approved

The council approved an almost $2.7 million construction project on MidCity Drive with Bulls Construction Group.
“This is one of the last remaining public investments for the redevelopment of Madison Square Mall,” Huntsville Urban and Economic Development Director Shane Davis said. “We are almost complete.”

The project will include major streetscape enhancements between Stax and Sanderson streets.

The project will feature new roadway pavers, on-street parking, decorative street lighting, concrete sidewalks, landscaping, hardscaping and a quarter-acre park at The Point. The park will be equipped with a small pavilion, seating areas, landscaping, irrigation and utilities.
Construction is expected to start within the next 15 days.

Davis said the Madison Square Mall redevelopment included several commercial projects that have been completed or nearing completion. The city’s portion includes property used for public parking and a park for the Orion Amphitheater.

“So, Apollo Park is the last piece,” he said. “It’s coming along very nicely. It’s approximately 70% complete.”
