A substitute teacher in north Alabama was arrested for allegedly engaging in a sex act with a student under 19 years old, authorities announced Friday.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint about a substitute teacher possibly having “inappropriate relations” with a student, said Sheriff Nick Welden.

The investigation led to the arrest Friday of Stephanie Mechelle Woods, 45, of Henagar, the sheriff said.

A news release announcing the arrest did not say which school or schools in DeKalb County Woods worked at.

Woods was booked into the DeKalb County Detention Center on a charge of school employee engaging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19 years.

“I would like to thank our Investigations Unit and the Board of Education for their earnestness in getting this case taken care of,” Welden said in a statement. “Our children have every right to feel safe at school, and parents have every right to expect it. Our children are our No. 1 priority and we will protect them at all cost.”

Further information on the incident was not released.
