SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

Time is running out for those needing a REAL ID—known as a STAR ID in Alabama—or a passport for domestic air travel. Starting May 7, 2025, only state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards meeting REAL ID security standards will be accepted for official purposes, such as boarding commercial flights, according to a recent announcement from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

The TSA emphasizes that the updated enforcement timeline allows federal agencies to implement REAL ID rules while balancing security, operational risks, and public impact.

“The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, was designed to enhance security measures for identification, addressing vulnerabilities exposed by the 9/11 attacks,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “Verifying identity is essential to security. I encourage anyone relying on a driver’s license or state-issued ID for federal purposes or air travel to confirm it complies with REAL ID requirements. We remain committed to ensuring a smooth transition when enforcement begins on May 7, 2025.”

What is a STAR ID?

The STAR ID—short for Secure, Trusted, Reliable—looks similar to a standard driver’s license but features a gold star in the upper left corner. It aligns with the REAL ID Act of 2005, which sets federal standards for ID security, authentication, and issuance procedures.
