The Baltimore County Fire Department recently announced the elevation of Fire Lieutenant April Owens to the role of Fire Captain. Owens, who is also a member of the executive board, will be the first Black female to achieve this rank since the founding of the Baltimore Fire Department in 1882.
“It is a blessing and an honor,” Owens said, who has worked with the Fire Department for over 35 years.
Owens was promoted on Feb. 23 through her position as the captain went into effect on Feb. 26. She credits her brother, who is also a firefighter at the Montgomery County Fire Department, as one of the biggest inspirations.
