A capital murder suspect out on bond was one of two men taken into custody following an east Jefferson County chase earlier this week.
Cameron Dejuan Blanding, set to go to trial later this year in a deadly 2020 home invasion, and Damonta Brooks, were arrested Monday by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies with the Sheriff’s Neighborhood Enforcement Team and Center Point patrol deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on a white Jeep Grand Cherokee at 13th Avenue NW and Second Street N.W.
Spokesman Henry Irby said as a deputy approached the vehicle, the driver sped off.
The pursuit ended in the 4000 block of 49th Court North when the driver hit a curb and left the roadway.
Both men fled on foot.
The driver was quickly taken into custody. The passenger was found a short time later in the 4100 block of 49th Terrace North.
Brooks, 28, is charged with attempting to elude, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, receiving stolen property and obstructing justice.
Blanding, 32, is charged with attempting to elude and unlawful breaking and entering of a vehicle.
Additionally, a Jefferson County judge has revoked Blanding’s bond on the previous attempted murder and capital murder charges.
It wasn’t immediately clear why Blanding was out of jail on a capital murder charge, or when that release took place. Blanding has a lengthy criminal record.
Blanding is one of two people charged with capital murder and attempted murder in the Feb. 6, 2020, home invasion that left 27-year-old Devonta Reddick dead and wounded Sabrea Baylor, who delivered the couple’s baby the day after the shooting.
Previously charged was Melvin Charles Morris, who is also scheduled for trial later this year.
Devonta Reddick
Reddick and Baylor were asleep in their home on Dogwood Lane off Five Mile Road when at least two men forced their way inside about 6:30 a.m. that Thursday.
Reddick was found unresponsive in the front yard and pronounced dead on the scene. Baylor, who was nine months pregnant, was wounded but both she and the baby survived.
Authorities have said the deadly shooting happened the suspects were breaking into the home to commit theft.
Jefferson County Circuit Judge Stephen Wallace revoked Blanding’s bond after his arrest earlier this week.
