The sweet smell of collard greens, green beans, turkey and more filled the City View at McCulloh community room Nov. 24 as the men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity served a Thanksgiving meal to residents ahead of the big holiday.

With a special focus on the senior citizens who call the apartment complex “home,” the men of Kappa Alpha Psi’s Baltimore Alumni Chapter served those present alongside members of its Kappa League, an auxiliary organization geared towards young men who are in middle and high school.

“‘Thanksgiving for All’ is an event that we do on an annual basis in the spirit of helping our partners in the community,” said Baltimore Alumni Chapter Polemarch Don Ervin. “One of the things we are really proud of is making sure our neighborhood partners reap the fruits of our labor when we have fundraisers. That money comes to events like this.”

“We’re serving and leading with intention,” he said, as laughter and holiday music filled the room. “That’s why it’s important that we do this.”

Resident Dorothy Matties, 63, appreciated the men of Kappa Alpha Psi and their service.

“It is very good of them to come here– especially the young guys,” she said.

Matties, 63, said she was appreciative of the service, but even more pleased to see the “older fellows showing the young men that this is a better way to do things and get ahead.”

Maryland State Sen. Antonio L. Hayes (D- Md.- 40) highlighted that giving back is a major part of being a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

“Kappa Alpha Psi  is an organization founded on core principles like service. We continuously give back,” said Maryland State Sen. Antonio L. Hayes (D- Md.- 40). “It’s really important that we embrace the community– that we are part of and live up to the founding principles of this organization to inspire service in every field of human endeavor.”
