On Sunday, April 21st, the Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama, celebrated the 35th Pastoral Anniversary of the Rev. Dr. O. Wendell Davis and his wife, Mother Dora M. Davis, during the 9:00 a.m. worship service. The event was a special occasion during which the congregation, family, and friends expressed their appreciation for their devoted pastor and his wife.
The celebration was graced by the presence of Dr. William J. Harper, Pastor at Greater Love Baptist Church in Gulfport, Misissippi, who is not only a respected figure in his own right but also the father of Pastor Davis. Also in attendance was Pastor Leon Bell, Jr., who delivered a powerful message and was accompanied by his congregation from Saint Joseph Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama, showcasing the unity and support within the Baptist community.
Pastor Davis’s tenure as the servant leader of Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, which began in May 1989, was marked by his innovative spirit and forward-thinking approach. His introduction of a 7:45 a.m. Sunday service, initially met with resistance, soon became the church’s most popular service, setting a trend that other local African American churches followed. This is just one example of the profound impact Pastor Davis and his wife have had on the church.
In addition to pioneering new worship times, Pastor Davis guided the church in acquiring 150 acres of land on Winchester Road, the church’s current location. The acreage belonged to Frank Ellis Strong, a formerly enslaved person who previously owned this land. These achievements are just a few examples of Pastor Davis and his wife’s significant contributions to the church’s legacy over the years.
The anniversary celebration honored the enduring influence and leadership of Pastor Davis and Mother Dora M. Davis. As they continue their ministry, their dedication and vision remain evident in the growth and success of the church.
The celebration was also marked by a focus on recognizing those who work diligently in service to others, drawing inspiration from 1 Thessalonians 5:12- 13b (NIV): “Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you and are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.”
