An 83-year-old veteran was found slain inside his Pratt City home Monday morning.

Birmingham police responded to the home in the 600 block of Sheridan Road just after 9 a.m.

A woman who identified herself as the mother of the victim’s daughter said she hadn’t heard from him all weekend, so she went to the home to check on him. That’s when she found the victim dead and called 911.

Officers made entry and found the victim dead. Sgt. Rod Mauldin said the injuries are consistent with a homicide, but they aren’t yet saying how he was killed.

No suspects are in custody.

“We do believe it was possibly somebody that knew the victim,” Mauldin said.

Several family members of the victim were on the scene, including his adult son.

“We do believe this was an isolated incident so there is no threat to the public right now,’’ Mauldin said.

The victim is Birmingham’s 51st homicide this year. Of those, five have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 67 homicides, including the 51 in Birmingham.

Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
