A woman was arrested Friday in connection with the fatal shooting of an 8-year-old child at the hands of a 4-year-old child last year in north Alabama.

Kimberly Boykin, of Phil Campbell, was arrested Friday on criminally negligent homicide charges, according to the Franklin County jail.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office could not be reached for comment, but Sheriff Shannon Oliver told the Franklin County Times that Boykin was accused of “recklessly leaving a loaded firearm where a child could reach it” in March 2023.

Oliver also told the paper that Boykin was indicted, but Boykin’s case was not in online state court records Friday afternoon.

It was unclear whether Boykin was related to either of the boys.

Oliver said the Phil Campbell woman left her home when the 4-year-old child found the gun, picked it up and fired it, hitting the 8-year-old child in the abdomen.

An older sibling called 911 after the shooting, the sheriff said.

The 8-year-old was taken to a local hospital, where they died of their injuries.
