In their first home Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match, the Alabama A&M volleyball team (4-13, 2-3 SWAC) defeated the reigning SWAC tournament champions, Jackson State University (8-9, 4-2 SWAC), in a five-set battle, 25-19, 12-25, 28-26, 23-25, 15-13.
Senior Saldy Amparo-Smith led the team offensively, tallying 18 kills and three service aces. Defensively, she picked up 10 balls from the floor and notched two and a half blocks. Madison Raybon led the team in hitting percentage, at .615%, terminating 9 balls on 13 swings. Michell Jerez recorded 12 digs during the match. Laela Price notched 20
assists, followed by Grace Tapscott’s 17 assists and 3 service aces.
Jackson State was paced both offensively and defensively by Jayden James who tallied 15 terminations and 11 digs. Karys Dove also notched 11 digs and led the team in assists and service aces, 30 and three, respectively. Kyra dove led the team in hitting percentage at .609%, and blocks, at four.
The Bulldogs return to play on Monday, facing off with the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University at 6 p.m. (CT) in Elmore Gymnasium.
