The Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee, in collaboration with Arizona Opportunities Industrialization Center, City of Phoenix Equal Opportunity Department (EOD), and City of Phoenix Human Relations Commission (HRC), is still accepting nominations for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Calvin C. Goode “Lifetime Achievement” and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Living the Dream” awards.

The committee will select one individual for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Calvin C. Goode “Lifetime Achievement Award” and four individuals for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Living the Dream Award.” The Life-time Achievement Award, named after 22-year Phoenix City Councilman Calvin C. Goode, will recognize an individual who has made Phoenix a better place to live by promoting social and economic justice and civil rights. The Living the Dream Award honors individuals who embody the ideas of Dr. King through a personal commitment to human relations and justice.

The selected honorees will be celebrated at the 37th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. MLK Awards & Scholarship Breakfast, Friday, Jan. 13, 2023, presented by PetSmart and Verizon.

The Arizona OIC (azoic.org), headed by President/CEO Dr. Gene Blue, oversees and manages the Arizona MLK Celebration Committee.

“We were committed to continuing our Annual AZ MLK Awards Celebration, even in the midst of a major pandemic. Even though we were successful with our virtual programs for 2 years, it will be good to be back in person, as we celebrate our 37th year, Dr. Blue said.

The chair of the Arizona MLK Events and Activities Committee, Ron Williams, added, “I have been honored to chair these Arizona MLK Activities for the last eight years. We’re looking forward to celebrating back at the Phoenix Convention Center.”

The Phoenix HRC’s mission is to promote respect and understanding among all groups by eliminating discrimination throughout the city. Each year, the HRC seeks human rights award nominations to recognize individuals, including youth, who have made an impact on the quality of life in Phoenix.

Nominations will be accepted online at the City of Phoenix EOD website (phoenix.gov/eod) and Arizona MLK Celebration Committee website, azmlk.org. The nomination deadline is Sept. 9, 2022.
