A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted a Birmingham teen in the 2023 shooting death of a 34-year-old father and the wounding of his young son.

The indictments for capital murder and first-degree assault against 19-year-old Adaryon Jarrod Coachman were issued Jan. 12 and made public on Monday. The shooting killed Alonzo Montez Robinson and wounded 1-year-old Alontavius, who shot multiple times.

Coachman was quickly taken into custody and has remained in the Jefferson County Jail without bond since then.

The charge is a capital crime because the victim was killed in front of his children.

The gunfire erupted just before 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2023, in the public housing community in the 7800 block of Wisdom Way in northeastern Jefferson County.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched on a report of multiple people shot, said Lt. Joni Money.

They arrived to find the 34-year-old father dead and his young son injured. Both had been shot multiple times.

The child was taken to Children’s of Alabama with critical injuries.

Money said the investigation shows there had been an ongoing neighborhood dispute that resulted in an argument Saturday afternoon. Coachman, Money said, pulled a gun and fired numerous shots at the adult victim, also striking the child.

Investigators marked multiple shell casings just outside an apartment unit, feet away from the housing community’s playground.

JCSO Homicide June 24, 2023
A man was killed and a 1-year-old boy was critically injured in a June 24, 2023, shooting in Jefferson County.

Family said Robinson’s apartment was right next to the housing complex’s playground. A dispute between juveniles had taken place there and Robinson was targeted because he tried to diffuse the situation.

“He was going to look out for all kids no matter who they were,’’ his mother, Michelle Robinson, previously told AL.com. “He was a good son, a good father and he didn’t bother nobody.”

Robinson, affectionately known as Twenty, left behind four sons, ages 1 to 16, and his first daughter, who was born just three weeks before Robinson was killed. He also had three stepchildren he was helping to raise.

A trial date has not yet been announced.
