STRACHAN WILL WORK TO IMPROVE TEACHER RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION

Associate Professor Accepted to Stanford University Faculty Innovation Fellowship Program

Dr. Samantha Strachan, an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator in the Department of Teacher Education and Leadership, was recently accepted as a candidate into Stanford University’s Faculty Innovation Fellowship Program. The two-year candidacy will allow Strachan to work with faculty from all over the world as she applies principles of design thinking to improve teacher recruitment and retention.

The Faculty Innovation Fellowship Program is led by Stanford University’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, also known as the d.school.

Strachan’s project entitled “The Good, The Great, and the Not So Ugly: Changing the Narrative on Teaching and Teacher Preparation,” will focus on using design thinking principles to not only challenge how others perceive the teaching field, but to also improve how prospective teachers are recruited and retained.

“I am very excited to be given the opportunity to represent AAMU while working alongside other faculty through the d.school,” says Strachan. “I look forward to using what I have learned to inject new and fresh ideas into how we can recruit the best and brightest into the teaching profession.”

Strachan has over 17 years of experience as a STEM educator, in addition to serving as a higher education administrator.

The New Providence, Bahamas, native has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada; a Master of Education (Biology) from Alabama A&M University and a Doctor of Education (Science) from Morgan State University.

Strachan’s candidacy in the Faculty Innovation Fellowship Program will end in 2025.
