On September 19, 2024, Alabama A&M University’s Journalism Workshop Class visited Speakin’ Out News for an immersive learning experience. Dr. Charlotte Teague, Chairperson of the Department of English and Foreign Languages at AAMU, led the class, which included thirteen undergraduates, on this special visit.
The students had the unique opportunity to explore Speakin’ Out News’ historical inception documents dating back to the newspaper’s founding in 1980, over forty-four years ago. William Smothers, the founder and publisher of the newspaper, personally guided the group through the publication’s historical hallway. Along the way, they viewed a rich collection of awards, recognitions, and photographs that showcased Speakin’ Out News’ deep civic involvement in Alabama. The tour also highlighted the evolution of the newspaper over the decades, demonstrating its enduring impact on the community.
Afterward, the students met with key department heads who are instrumental in the day-to-day operations of the newspaper. These leaders included Jemeana Smothers-Roberson, Associate Publisher and Managing Editor; Knegleshia Smothers-Cobb, Chief Financial Officer; Zoie Roberson, Youth Director; Shelly Williams, Photographer; and Portia Orr, Office Manager. Each of these professionals provided insights into their roles in ensuring the newspaper’s continued success and relevance.
The visit left a lasting impression on the students. Many expressed their gratitude and admiration for the work being done at Speakin’ Out News. Several of them eagerly sought further engagement with the publication’s team, hoping to secure internships or future employment opportunities, and expressed excitement for future collaborations.
This visit not only provided a glimpse into the operations of a successful community newspaper but also ignited a spark of interest in many students, inspiring them to pursue further opportunities in journalism and media.
