A Shelby County woman has been charged in the alleged abuse and neglect of a disabled family member.
Cora June Morris, 69, of Wilsonville, is charged with felony neglect/abuse of a disabled adult, sheriff’s officials announced Wednesday.
Charging documents state Morris used zip ties to bind the female victim, who has Down Syndrome, to a table on a patio, for hours at a time. The victim sustained injuries from the zip ties.
The victim also didn’t properly feed the victim to the point where she became malnourished, according to the criminal complaint.
The investigation began in September when the sheriff’s office received a report alleging the abuse by Morris, who was the woman’s caregiver.
The Alabama Department of Human Resources and Owens House Advocacy Center assisted in the investigation.
A court order was obtained to remove the victim from the home while additional evidence and information could be gathered in the case.
Morris was taken into custody Tuesday and booked into the Shelby County Jail. She was released the same day after posting $15,000 bond.
This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 205-670-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
