A weekend shooting that left a teen student seriously injured in Selma has prompted two schools to transition to virtual learning.

Selma High School and Saints Virtual Academy/Alternative School moved to virtual learning today.

Selma police Chief Kenta Fulford said a student was wounded in a shooting that happened about 3 p.m. Saturday. The chief said shooting is believed to have been retaliation from an incident that happened last week.

Selma City Schools Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd said there were multiple shootings over the weekend. He said the virtual learning will remain in place until the suspects are apprehended or until police presence at the schools is increased.

“This decision comes out of concerns of possible retaliation,’’ Byrd said. “Our mission is to keep our scholars and staff safe at all times.”

Byrd said no arrests have been made at this time.

Selma City Schools released this statement:

“Please know that the safety and security of our scholars and staff are of utmost importance to Selma City Schools.

In light of recent events affecting our community and at the recommendation of local law enforcement, Selma High School and Saints Virtual Academy/ Alternative School will transition to a virtual learning day on Monday, April 29, 2024.

Selma High School and Saints Virtual Academy / Alternative School Students should log on to their IXL accounts for posted assignments.

This change applies to Selma High School and Saints Virtual Academy/ Alternative School. All other schools will maintain their regular schedules.”
