A mass recall has been issued for salmon slices sold in Kroger and Payless grocery stores across 15 states over concerns they may potentially be contaminated with listeria.

Foppen Seafood’s ‘Smoked Norwegian Salmon Slices’ have been recalled from some supermarkets by the company after Listeria monocytogenes was found in their lot during routine testing. The potentially infected items are ‘toast sized’ salmon slices sold in 8.1-ounce packages with UPC code ‘8 40137 10000 2 and lot number ‘412.’

According to a June 25 notice from the FDA, the salmon slices were sold in Kroger and Payless Supermarkets in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.

Consumers should discard products or return for refund. Customers who have purchased the affected Smoked Norwegian Salmon Slices with lot number 412 are advised not to consume the product. They should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or replacement.

Symptoms of listeria food poisoning vary depending on the severity of the illness and symptoms may last from days to several weeks. Mild symptoms may include a fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If the more severe form of listeriosis develops, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
