Dr. Adrain Christopher, Assistant Professor of Special Education

Dr. Adrain Christopher, Assistant Professor of Special Education, has been awarded a $1.25 million federal grant from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) to launch Project TEACH (Training Educators for All Children with Handicaps) Like a Bulldog. This initiative addresses the pressing shortage of special education teachers in Alabama by providing financial assistance for scholars pursuing initial Class B certification in Special Education through the Bachelor of Science in Education degree (BSEd) or the Temporary Special Education Certificate (TSEC) program.

“Project TEACH Like a Bulldog will fully fund 60 scholars – comprising eight traditional undergraduates and 52 TSEC candidates recommended by the district – covering required coursework along with expenses for books, supplies, mentorship, and professional travel,” says Christopher. The project is particularly focused on recruiting and preparing candidates from underrepresented backgrounds, including multilingual individuals and those with disabilities, who are committed to becoming licensed special education teachers to help alleviate the statewide shortage of highly qualified professionals.”

Christopher emphasizes Project TEACH will utilize coaching-based pedagogies to equip scholars with the skills necessary to implement high-leverage, evidence-based, and culturally responsive practices. These strategies aim to enhance educational outcomes for students with disabilities in high-need school districts.

“By providing financial support, we hope to eliminate barriers that often prevent students from enrolling in or completing their education studies,” Christopher explains. “We are honored to be part of this innovative effort to mitigate the critical teacher shortage in Alabama. By offering both financial and non-financial support, we aim to ensure a seamless transition from pre-service to novice teacher for our candidates, fostering their growth as purposeful, present, and productive professionals.”

Cohort 1 commenced in Fall 2024, with the selection for Cohort 2 expected to begin in Spring 2025. For more information about Project TEACH Like a Bulldog, please contact Dr. Adrain Christopher at adrain.christopher@aamu.edu.
