On Sept. 12, 1814, Baltimore’s residents, Black and White, male and female, free and enslaved, came together to defend our country from a foreign aggressor. We won. While the War of 1812 has been called “America’s Second War of Independence,” there are some who say that our victory was, in fact, a failure because it did not bring full equality to all men and women. In the end, however, it reflected our resilience and ability to work together to defend our nation. It set the stage for the 207 years that followed. We salute all men and women, Black and White, who defend freedom and liberty for ALL.
In commemoration of the Defense of Baltimore in September 1814, we request the honor of your presence at a special screening of the film “In Freedom’s Name: Maryland’s Black Men and Women and their Defense of Liberty” from 6-7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023, in the Wheeler Auditorium of the Enoch Pratt Central Library, located at 400 Cathedral St. in Baltimore.
Made possible by the Maryland Military Historical Society, The Baltimore National Heritage Area, Maryland Heritage Area Authority and Stevenson University, this film project is a complement to the 43-panel exhibit of the same name that is now on display in Annapolis.
