An investigation into a north Alabama house fire earlier this month determined three family members were killed in a double murder-suicide before the house became engulfed in flames, the Madison County sheriff said Wednesday.

Forensic analysis showed Harold Celestine, 46, his wife, Marie Celestine, 49, and their daughter, Meliyah Celestine, 16, died of gunshot wounds prior to the fire at their home Jan. 7 in Monrovia, according to Madison County Sheriff Kevin Turner.

Autopsies by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences revealed the deaths of Harold Celestine and his daughter were homicides while Marie Celestine’s death was ruled a suicide.

All three sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

The preliminary investigation into the fire showed the house was occupied at the time of the fire and remains were found inside the home.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragic event. Our hearts go out to those who are grieving, and we truly hope that they can find some sense of healing and closure in the days to come,” Turner said in a statement.

“The families and their loved ones remain in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
