On March 3, 2022, the sole officer to face charges for shooting through the apartment leased to Breonna Taylor in March 2020, was found not guilty of all charges.
The trial was live-streamed on a variety of networks, to include the Law and Crime Trial Network. Viewers could watch as Brett Hankinson explained what happened nearly two years ago from his perspective.
On day six of the trial, a jury returned their verdict, finding no fault.
The former Louisville Metropolitan Police Department (LMPD) officer was not on trial this week for shooting bullets into the body of the 26-year-old emergency medical technician.
In fact, the only reason Hankison was charged at all was because some of his bullets tore through the walls of Taylor’s apartment and endangered her neighbors.
“The Grand Jury determined that there is no evidence to support a criminal violation of state law caused Ms. Taylor’s death,” announced Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear in a statement, just six months after Taylor’s death. “The Grand Jury found that there was sufficient evidence to indict Detective Hankison for wanton endangerment for firing his weapon outside a sliding glass door and through a bedroom window, with some bullets traveling through that apartment and entering the apartment next door while three residents were at home.”
Ultimately, no one has answered for Breonna Taylor’s brutal death, but her killing has forever changed the country.
Gov. Beshear signed legislation into law that limits the hours no-knock warrants can be served to the 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. timeframe, unless there are “substantial and imminent risks to the health and safety of the persons executing the warrant, the occupants of the premises, or the public that justify the entry without notice occur during other hours designated by the court.”
In September 2021, the Department of Justice also announced new regulations to limit the use of no-knock warrants.
