Former Hampton and Howard head basketball coach Kevin Nickelberry, who stepped in to lead LSU in the NCAA Tournament after head coach Will Wade was released just before the start of March Madness, has landed on Patrick Ewing’s staff at Georgetown.
Nickelberry, 57, is a Washington, D. C. native who will be heading back to the nation’s capital to join Ewing as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He was previously the head coach at Howard from 2010-19. He was also head coach at Hampton from 2006 to 2009.
“I’m excited about coming back home – I grew up in DC and I, like so many others, was a Georgetown fan,” Nickelberry said on the Georgetown website. “I am ready to hit the ground running and help Coach Ewing achieve his goals of restoring Georgetown Basketball to national prominence. The DC area has always been good to me and my career and I am excited to be able to recruit locally as well as nationally because Georgetown is, and always will be, a national brand.”
The Hoyas struggled this year to a 6-25 overall record and 0-19 record in Big East play. Two of Ewing’s assistants were let go following the season.
In a hard-fought game after a week filled with adversity, LSU with Nickelberry at the helm was seeded sixth and lost their opener in an upset against No. 11-seeded Iowa State. The Cyclones went on to make a run to the Sweet 16. Nickelberry had been an assistant to Wade for three years at LSU.
He is a 1986 graduate of Virginia Wesleyan where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications.
