PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Chad Moodie led three Alabama A&M University men’s basketball players with a career-high 21 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a halftime deficit in an 87-76 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) loss to Prairie View A&M on Monday night at the William J. Nicks Building.
Alabama A&M (3-17 overall, 2-5 SWAC) went more than five minutes without a field goal in the first half as Prairie View A&M used an 18-0 run to grab the lead. The Panthers (8-12, 3-4) saw its lead dwindle to five points late, but sealed the victory at the free-throw line.
Moodie, who scored a career-high 16 points on Saturday against Texas Southern, went 10-of-12 from the floor to finish with a career-best 21 points, three rebounds, three blocks, one assist and one steal. Dailin Smith poured in 13 points, a team-high seven assists, three steals and two boards, while London Riley came off the bench to record 10 points, one board and one assist.
Javontae Hopkins led the Panthers with a game-high 31 points, five rebounds, three steals and one assist. Orlando Horton Jr. tallied 20 points, two steals, one assist and one board. Brian Myles posted a double-double of 21 rebounds and 12 points, with three assists, two blocks and one steal, while Charles Smith IV added 12 points, four boards, two assists and one steal
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alabama A&M broke free of a close game, using a 9-2 run, capped by a dunk by Smith, as the Bulldogs took a 19-12 advantage with 12:14 remaining
- AAMU went cold from the field, going more than five minutes without a bucket as PVAMU used a 18-0 run, capped by a Charles Lane Jr. layup as the Panthers grabbed a 30-19 lead with 7:06 left
- The Bulldogs ended a nearly six-minute stretch without a field goal as Darius Osborne scored on a layup as AAMU trailed, 30-24, with 6:32 remaining
- Buckets by London Riley and AC Bryant closed the gap to 32-27 with just over five minutes to play
- The Panthers responded with six straight points, pushing the margin to 38-27 after two free throws by Andre Nunley with 2:46 left
- Cameron Tucker completed a three-point play right before the break as Alabama A&M trailed, 40-32, at halftime
- The Bulldogs continued to close the gap, trimming the deficit to 51-48, after buckets by EJ Williams and Moodie with 12:16 remaining
- A Moodie layup closed the gap to 52-50 with 11:33 left
- However, Prairie View A&M used a 12-2 run over the next three minutes, capped by a fastbreak layup by Hopkins, as the Panthers extended the lead to 64-52 with just under nine minutes to play
- Alabama A&M pulled to within seven points, 76-69, after a triple by Riley with just under two minutes to play
- PVAMU pushed the lead to 80-71 after free throws by Hopkins, but Riley drained a 3-pointer with 59 seconds left, cutting the deficit to 80-74
- After a free-throw by Nunley, Moodie scored on a layup, trimming the margin to 81-76, with 45 seconds remaining
- However, the Panthers sealed the game at the foul line to pick up the victory
