Miles College will receive a $50,000 scholarship endowment fund for their Division of Communications on Aug. 23 from the Alabama Broadcasters Association (ABA).
Dr. Steven E. Hairston, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, said this is an “extremely exciting” moment for Birmingham’s historically Black college. Up to 10 students – five students per semester – will be eligible for this scholarship starting in the spring or fall of 2024, Hairston said.
Communications division chair Dr. Bala Baptiste has been working with the ABA to provide opportunities for their students, according to Hairston. He added that the college has been in a significant fundraising mode since 2019 and is grateful to the ABA for supporting their students.
“This is a great opportunity,” Hairston said. “We truly appreciate the Alabama Broadcasting Association for thinking of Miles College and for thinking of our students. We try every single day to avail our students the opportunities that will make them good citizens, good journalists (and) go out and make a positive impact on society. This helps us to do it.
The ABA will present the check at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the Miles College Welcome Center.
