A man found in the Styx River near the Seminole community of Baldwin County on March 26, 2000 has been identified after more than 22 years, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office announced today.
Forensic testing has revealed the man was Daniel Muniz Jr., a migrant worker from Texas who had been estranged from his family for many years.
Authorities say they believe Muniz was working in Alabama when he drowned 22 years ago.
In 2019, the case was reopened to identify the body, which had several distinctive tattoos,.
A media release was distributed and information on the victim and photos of the tattoos were also sent to several missing person websites.
The case remained cold until June 2021 when the stepdaughter of the victim came across photos of the tattoos while searching for Muniz. The stepdaughter contacted local media in Mobile and eventually the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office.
On April 21, 2022, a positive identification was made by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.
